And so the final day of the season arrived amongst expectation of an undefeated season for the yellow and black army. The weather tried its best to postpone the game and a pitch inspection took place early, but the playing conditions were perfect and the final game of the season kicked off despite the monsoon type rain. Euro looked strong, proved by their recent results and struck the bar early on from range with Dogru smashing clear to avert the danger although, Olson looked like he had the original attempt covered. Cougars began to work their way into game despite the nervy start and looked to have a wonderful chance as Francis found Vile who went through on goal but cynically hacked down on the edge of the box. The hero from last week Kraus couldn’t muster up a speciality free kick however as he struck wide. Cougars then played some wonderful football with Kraus and Fisher involved, to find Francis who broke the deadlock with a wonderful strike, 1-0. The game turned into a real battle with Euro Dagenham trying to find routes back in making life difficult for the defensive duo of Littleton and Dogru. Lodge battled well when he came on and made some good runs down the left however, Cougars failed to organise properly from a throw-in and the Euro attack punished by scoring a screamer minutes before the half time whistle to see the sides walk in level, one-a-piece at the break.
The second half kicked off with increasing Euro pressure and with 5 minutes gone the away side thumped in another to take the lead after possession was given away in the centre. Dagenham were now the first team to take the lead against Cougars this season, but the Comeback Kings of the season previous continued to battle against a very resilient Euro defence. After a wonderful pass from Kraus, Austin beat the man and was brought down inside the box as the ref had no choice but to point to the spot. Francis stepped up and struck the result kick into the bottom level superbly to bring proceedings level at 2-2. This gave the yellow and blacks confidence for the final 5 minutes and looked as if they would be able to grab a winner. With moments to go the ball was fired into Austin who retrieved the ball after a heavy first touch 30 yards from goal, back to goal and on the floor. He then beat one man on his way back upto his feet, dropped the shoulder past the second only to be cynically taken out when through in on goal on his way past the third, the story of Euro Dagenham’s defensive display when in trouble. Kraus was unlucky with the resulting free kick deflecting wide. The final whistle blew and was greeted with huge cheers from the home faithful, Cougars ‘B’ undefeated champions of the league, what an amazing feat! Final score 2-2.
*Manager’s verdict*
Well the game was a fierce battle and probably the first time a side has matched us this season. It was undoubtly a difficult game to play in, but I can assure you it was no easier on the sidelines. The game had added pressure and Euro Dagenham are very strong side, legit or not. We passed the ball well in periods, despite the weather and provided two good passages of play to score our goals! As for the season you should be extremely proud, not only league champions but go a season unbeaten is a fantastic achievement. Well done all of you! Man of the match today was Callum with a good midfield display and wonderful finishing under pressure, well done!
Thankyou boys and parents for a wonderful season, Im sure you will agree it has been most enjoyable and it is a pleasure to watch the boys walk out every game and perform to the highest of their ability. It has been a massive team effort to get to this stage over the past three years and I could not have met a better bunch of mums, dads (granddads!) and set of boys to do football with! Long may it continue for the future!!!
